Name:   Fungus Gnat Laying an Egg
Age:  Oligocene
Formation:  Amber Mines
Location:  Dominican Republic
Size:  Amber piece is 0.45 inches long

This is a rare amber fossil. It is a Fungus Gnat preserved in Dominican Amber. This specimen is extremely collectible in that the Fungus Gnat is laying an egg! This is a very rare occurrence in the fossil record. There is one large, intact egg just deposited by the female Fungus Gnat. The egg is easily seen at the tail end if the Gnat. The Gnat itself has great detail preserved. This is a very unusual amber fossil that tells a unique story (small close-up photo is included for free).
